  • 4 large onions
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 6 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • Slices of baguette
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. Begin by slicing 4 large onions thinly.
  2. In a large pot, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
  3. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt, stirring frequently until they caramelize, about 25-30 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle in 1 teaspoon of sugar to enhance caramelization.
